## How to make your chart

1. **Add people** with their names and, if you know them, birth and death years. “Connect to someone already here” links each new person as you go.
2. **Add links** for anything you skipped: who is whose parent, and who were partners. Everyone can have two parents.
3. **Pick a chart.** Ancestors shows one person’s parents, grandparents and further back; Descendants shows someone’s children and grandchildren with their partners; Both puts ancestors above and descendants below; Blank pedigree gives empty boxes to fill in by hand.
4. **Choose a look**, paper size and orientation, then print, or download a PNG for sharing or an SVG that stays sharp at any size.

## Your family stays on your device

Names and dates are personal information, especially about living relatives. Everything you enter is saved in this browser’s local storage and is never uploaded. Use “Save tree” to keep a backup file and “Open a saved tree” to load it again.

## Printing tips

The sheet matches the printable area of the paper with 12 mm margins, so print at 100% or “Actual size”. Four generations fit well on one landscape page; for five or six, try left to right on portrait paper. The blackwork theme saves colour ink.

## More family tools

Each tool has its own page. Your entries are remembered in this browser, so you can come back and carry on.

- [Cousin relationship calculator](https://kinfolkcanvas.sbs/cousin-calculator/): Second cousin or first cousin once removed? Get the exact name, both ways.
- [Generation & age gap calculator](https://kinfolkcanvas.sbs/generation-age-gap-calculator/): Age gaps, average generation length and the years relatives were alive together.
- [Family reunion planner](https://kinfolkcanvas.sbs/family-reunion-planner/): Guest list by household, RSVPs, headcount, a fair budget split and a countdown checklist.

### Keep research sign-ups out of your inbox

Family history means signing up for archive searches, record-office newsletters and one-off downloads. CleanTempMail gives you a temporary address with no account, and the inbox deletes itself after three days.

### Check a records site before you pay

Found an unfamiliar site selling certificates, scans or family crests? WebTraceCheck shows how long its domain has existed and checks its security headers, or opens it in a disposable cloud browser that is deleted afterwards.

## Questions

**Can I import a GEDCOM file from a genealogy site?**

Not at the moment: the tool reads and writes its own JSON format. Most printed charts show four or five generations, which is 15 to 31 people, so adding them by hand is usually quick.

**How do I show half-siblings or a second marriage?**

Give each child their own two parents. In a descendant chart, each box lists the person’s partners, including anyone they had children with, and all of their children appear below.

**Why is a cousin missing from the ancestor chart?**

Ancestor charts only follow parents upward. To see aunts, uncles and cousins, make a descendant chart of a shared grandparent, or use the [cousin calculator](https://kinfolkcanvas.sbs/cousin-calculator/).
